The Bank of England reports that counterfeiting of banknotes has significantly decreased since 2019 due to a variety of factors. These include the introduction of more durable polymer banknotes, the removal of older paper designs, effective police intervention in tracking down sources and distribution of counterfeits and the shift towards electronic payments.
