Bank of England Conducts Carbon Footprint Assessment of GBP5 and GBP10 Banknotes

Bank of England introduced the first banknotes made from balanced biaxially oriented polypropylene (Polymer) into circulation in the UK in 2016. The GBP10 note in polymer followed in 2017. The Bank of England commissioned thinkstep to conduct a carbon footprint assessment to evaluate the performance of the new polymer banknotes and compare them with those of the previous cotton paper banknotes. The results of the carbon footprint assessment show that for both GBP5 and GBP10 denominations, polymer banknotes outperform paper banknotes in terms of their carbon footprint.
