New Zealand launches new ‘Brighter Money’ banknote family on Guardian™ polymer substrate
1 September 2015
Wellington, New Zealand - Prime Minister John Key joined the Reserve Bank Governor Graeme Wheeler and Deputy Governor Geoff Bascand to launch the first two denominations – $5 and $10 – in the new Guardian™ banknote family for New Zealand.
Launched under the ‘Brighter Money’ campaign name, the new banknotes have brighter colours that will assist New Zealanders in quickly identifying the denominations due to more intense colour contrasts between the notes.
Prime Minister John Key presents the new notes to the media.
Innovia Security’s Managing Director, Bernhard Imbach said “Through industry collaboration, these new notes also offer the world’s latest anti-counterfeit technology. Given the completely flat surface and the transparent nature of Guardian™ polymer substrate, the visual effects of these security features are optimised so that in combination with the new colour range, the public’s ability to authenticate a banknote is made that much easier.”
The new Guardian™ banknotes include some world-first technology in security features via collaboration amongst the banknote industry's leading technology companies.
The colour-changing birds with a rolling bar on the notes are made with SPARK™ Live from SICPA, and the large transparent holographic window was jointly developed by Canadian Bank Note, KBA-NotaSys and KURZ making this New Zealand series the first ever circulating banknotes to be printed with these new security features.

Governor Graeme Wheeler said that while the banknotes are technologically sophisticated and difficult to counterfeit, they are also aesthetically pleasing.
“All five denominations in the new banknotes carry the same security features that will help New Zealanders verify them with ease, and help to ensure that counterfeiting levels in New Zealand remain very low.” said Mr Wheeler.
A poll taken by popular news outlet ‘stuff.co.nz’ a few hours after the launch showed more than half of respondents approved the change to the new banknotes.
