Our company was born out of a central bank’s vision to “build a better banknote” and this goal has underpinned our polymer substrate technology ever since.
After launching the new Australian decimal system of currency in 1966, a major counterfeit fraud involving the $10 note was detected within the first 12 months of circulation. The government and the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) invested significant resources over the following two decades to combat this threat and develop a new paradigm in currency security.
The concept of polymer banknotes with Optically Variable Devices (OVDs) began with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in collaboration with Note Printing Australia (NPA), and was made possible by the move from Melbourne’s original Fitzroy site to the Craigieburn site that housed new facilities.
Guardian™ polymer banknotes launched in Australia in 1988 – the year of the nation's bicentenary. The commemorative $10 note contained both the world’s first transparent window and hologram, making it the most secure banknote of its time. With strong public support, the RBA introduced a $5 note for general circulation in 1992 followed by successive notes in subsequent years.
Throughout the 1990s, the innovative Guardian™ banknote substrate grew in popularity throughout the world, gaining the confidence of more than 30 central banks for use in mainstream denominations or as commemorative notes as a test and forerunner to future use.
In 1996, the RBA and Innovia Films entered into a joint venture to create Securency International. In 2013, Innovia acquired the RBA's 50% share in the business. The RBA proved an outstanding partner in helping Securency establish itself in the global banknote industry.
CCL Industries acquired Innovia Security in February 2017. Merging with Banknote Corporation of America, the company was rebranded as CCL Secure. CCL Industries' global footprint provides greater opportunities to drive the growth of polymer banknotes in even more markets.
Throughout CCL Secure’s history, Guardian™ has built a reputation as the world's most sophisticated banknote substrate.
CCL Secure continues to be at the forefront of innovation and has developed an extensive track record of firsts and new developments on an almost annual basis.
